Wow! I needed an SD card for my new digital camera. Speed of the disk is an issue these days. When you take a photo the disk has to store it then get ready for the next photo. Regular SD cards take some time to do that. So, if you are shooting rapidly, or doing video, you can quickly hit the limits of your regular SD cards speed. The Ultra II is in the next speed class up. It's plenty fast for all but the most extreme user. It's not as fast as the Extreme III, but that costs half again as much.

So, I was already sure the Ultra II 2GB was what I needed for size and speed. Then I saw it... this version where the case of the SD card folds in half revealing a USB Hub Port. Which means you can plug your tiny 2GB SD card straight into your laptop or computer through the USB port. No need for a card reader.

This card works in Treos, digital cameras, and anything else that takes a type I SD card.

It's big (memory), fast (memory access), and innovative (USB build in). For me it was worth a few extra dollars more than the regular Ultra II.

I found this a very intriguing book. The premise? Author Beth Lisick decides to change her life in several key areas but decides she can't do it alone. So she decides to use the experts, everyone from Richard Simmons to Jack Canfield.

The areas she wants to improve? Her career, marriage, figure, diet, home (less clutter), lack of organizational skills, etc. For marriage advice, she turns to John Gray, author of Men are from Mars, Women are From Venus and describes her reaction to more than 100 of his tips on improving male/female communication patterns and relationships.

Basically she decides that "if you can...edit out the dumb parts" he has some good advice, including the suggestion that women ask men for help directly rather than merely hinting about it. In the end she decides that her life will never measure up to the ideal marriage that is a goal but that she is comfortable with her marriage, problems and all.

This is pretty typical for the content of each chapter: explore the advice of an expert and then reflect on how it does (or doesn't) relate to the author's life, taking what works and discarding the rest.

What makes the book engaging is the author's open and honest writing about her daily trials and challenges. She and her husband face regular financial struggles and she has to resort to dressing as a banana sometimes for ad jobs that help make ends meet. She comes across as someone an average reader could understand, just trying to find a better way to cope with life but finding it hard to really stick with any program for long.

As for the "experts", none of them are described as being "the one" who saves the day for this author but there is an inside look at the differing viewpoints of such noted self-help figures as diverse as Richard Simmons (diet, weight control) and Julie Morgenstern (home organization, clutter management). The main points and highlights of each program are noted, often humorously, always in a lively way.

A pretty good start..., December 31, 2007

We've had our Pleo for four days now and we love him--when he's awake!

Pleo is a cunningly cute robotic toy that has a very "1.0" feel about it. For better and/or worse, you can tell that some envelopes are being pushed here. The baby dino can feel touches, knows when it is upside-down, and can "see" with a small camera in his snout. Supposedly it can hear but apparently not very well.

First the good news: Pleo behaves with a good degree of "intelligence". He will purr like a kitten and growl like a puppy; he responds to being petted or stroked under the chin. His reactions are a bit slow but generally appropriate. He won't walk off the edge of a table, although he *will* back off. He knows when something is in his mouth and will make feeding sounds or, if you jostle him, he will growl and play tug-of-war. His skill at tug-of-war is a highlight.

Also, if you decide to get a Pleo, be aware that the first few times you turn it on, it will be in a "newborn" state--sleepy and uncoordinated, wanting only to be petted. So some patience is required. It seems to take a few days for the robot to become fully active and more independant.

The bad: In current form, the battery life is frustratingly poor. Put simply, your Pleo will be an inanimate object 3/4 of the time. If your battery recharges correctly--mine overheats about half-way through--you will need to wait 3 or 4 hours to get an hour of activity from Pleo. (I knew this going in, but somehow the reality of it is worse than I expected.) Even when charged, our Pleo needs constant attention or he will quickly curl up for a nap! I understand that battery issues were responsible for the release date being pushed back by many months. A robot this aware and active obviously places great demands on the battery; it would be nice if two were included or at least available!

I debated on how many stars to give Pleo. In the end, I think it deserves 4 stars, even if only for potential. (As I typed this he walked to the desk leg and spent a minute exploring it with his camera, making sniffing noises. Then he nudged it with his snout and made a frustrated sound.) I hope that Ugobe will find a (much) better solution to the battery problem, and they have promised free software updates in the coming months.
